Recently, we were involved in a major security campaign lead by Microsoft against the Kelihos Botnet. The controllers of the Botnet found a way to abuse a popular free subdomain provider (http://cz.cc also developed by dotFree's founders), and were using those domains as a part of their operations. Microsoft sued the owners of the site together with dotFree Group, but we quickly resolved the matter and immediately took down the domains involved.
As a provider of free service we were always concerned by the potential for abuse, and learned (sometimes the hard way) that security should never be underestimated. No one wants to be handed a thick binder by a stranger at your nearby coffee shop saying "Microsoft is suing you"! Moving forward, we are pleased that Microsoft will continue working with dotFree and help us develop best practices for free domains and our .free Top Level Domain.
The Project
The dotFree Group was created in 2009 and has been giving away free domains ever since.
We accumulated valuable experience through our different projects and are constantly working on improving our products and services. Today, we operate over 600,000 free domains and process 15 million DNS requests a day.
Our goal is simple: give one free domain to each individual on the internet. With no annual or renewal fee, you can develop your domain the way you want, and be certain that you will still own it next year.
Meet the team
Dominique is a serial entrepreneur and the father of the .free project. Far from his native Swiss mountains, he developped the original idea of a free Top Level Domain and launched several free domain provider projects that are used by hundreds of thousands of people each day. He manages the technical end of the project and constantly works on improving our tools and system.
Jeremie brought his international experience and French touch to .free, while handling the daily business activities of the company. He makes sure that the user experience stays optimal and spreads the word about .free domains.
